When choosing a free-standing tub, be sure to consider all the features and design options you will have. If you love the look of a free-standing tub, but you don’t know what options are available to you, the Kansas City Bathroom Remodeling team can help!

Free-standing tubs are classic. You can refinish an antique tub for a truly authentic look, but today’s models offer a lot of modern features that you’ll appreciate.

Today’s Luxury with a Classic Aesthetic

For example, a free-standing tub that you purchase today can have any faucet configuration that you choose. In their earliest use, indoor plumbing wasn’t an option, so antique bathtubs were filled by buckets drawn from a well.

Now, you have the choice of free-standing fill valves and tub -mount fill valves as well as other, less common types.

  • Free-standing Fill Valve – Also called ‘floor mounted’, these faucets are positioned beside the tub, not inside. They need underfloor access, so a free-standing fill valve is not easy to install over concrete. Advantages include no holes being drilled in your tub, being able to place the faucet can be anywhere around the tub, and an authentic look.
  • Tub-mount Fill Valve – By far the most common type of faucet is the tub-mount. Choose from a ‘deck mount’ on the top rim of the tub or ‘tub wall mount’ where holes are drilled inside the tub. A tub-mount faucet also needs underfloor access. This is a tried-and-true design that our customers continue to request because the faucet handles are easy to reach, and there is no extra equipment outside the tub.

In addition to fill valve style, you can also get health benefits from your free-standing tub. There are many varieties of therapeutic free-standing tubs on the market today, with hydrotherapy features such as jets, bubbles, heat, and currents. Freestanding tubs are also a good idea if you are interested in an extra-deep soaking tub.

Designing Your Bathroom for a Free-standing Tub

Now the fun really begins! Our design team loves assisting homeowners with our extensive design knowledge. We stay current in the latest trends so that we can give our customers anything they’ve seen online or in a magazine!

These are two of the latest styles we’ve seen in conjunction with free-standing tubs:

  • Blanket Tile – This trend consists of smaller tile placed under the tub. The term ‘blanket’ refers to tile that has a soft look but very clear, clean lines.
  • Tile Wainscoting – We’ve seen it everywhere else in the house, so why not the bathroom? Wood wainscoting works in the bathroom, too, but the water-resistant surface of tile makes it a more practical choice. Wainscoting is 3-5 feet high, traditionally used to protect the walls from wear and tear, but it has become popular for its visual appeal. Tile wainscoting doesn’t have to be the traditional white that is seen in dining rooms and hallways.

Your Choice of Materials

To choose the perfect free-standing tub for your home, you must consider many factors, and the weight of the tub is definitely one of those things.

The earliest free-standing tubs were cast iron coated with porcelain, which was great for keeping water warm for longer, but they were extremely heavy and were nearly impossible to install anywhere other than a first floor bathroom.

Today, the Kansas City Bathroom Remodeling team can offer you many different materials for your free-standing tub. Lighter varieties include acrylic and fiberglass. Heavier yet stylish freestanding tubs are made of copper, stainless steel, and even stone.

When you think of a free-standing tub, you probably envision a claw-foot tub, but the pedestal style is popular as well. You can also choose from slipper designs and roll tops for comfort.

Kansas City Bathroom Remodeling is a family owned and operated bathroom renovation team that can design and deliver anything you can dream up! Consider us for your bathroom remodeling project, especially if it involves the installation of a free-standing tub. We love the look and functionality of these tubs, and we have the expertise to do the install them professionally.
