Remodeling a bathroom can be one of the most difficult rooms in the
house to renovate. In smaller homes with only one or two bathrooms, time
is of the essence. Nobody wants to be without a bathroom longer than
they have to. Working with a
bathroom remodeling contractor
who is wiling to set a deadline can keep a project from dragging on
longer than it has to. Another factor to contend with, is the constant
presence of moisture. Not only do you have your plumbing system to worry
about but also the drainage for your shower walls and floor. A plumbing
system consist of the drain lines, vent lines, and supply lines. A
poorly installed toilet could overflow when nobody is home, causing
thousands in damage. A cheap shut off valve can also be responsible for
major flooding in a home. Drain lines and vent lines are just as
important. I have seen drain lines that have not been glued properly.
Instead of a visible stream of water shooting out of the walls, this
problem will likely take longer to discover. The first sign will likely
be a slight odor. With all your plumbing lines buried inside of finished
walls, you are going to have to do some demolition before you can
identify the problem. Image a newly remodeled bathroom that has a
plumbing issue. All of your new tile has to be ripped out in order to
access a plumbing leak. Professional remodeling contractors are aware of
the liability and take extra care in ensuring things are done properly
the first time. What about sewer gas? There are several ways that sewer
gas can seep in through improper installation methods. If a bathroom is
not vented properly, a p-trap can be siphoned dry allowing sewer gas to
enter the living space.
Once your past all your possible
plumbing issues, you now have to content with the constant presence of
moisture created by normal usage. Shower or Bathtub walls should be
constructed out of 2x4 and cement board. The cement board should be
glued onto the 2x4 and fastened with a corrosion resistant fastener.
After the backer board is up should then be waterproofed. All seams,
joints, and corners are covered with a tar like product that will be
impervious to water. If your shower floor is tile, you have one more
area to worry about. In order to tile your floor you need a custom
shower pan. This one area that we area really trying to help set an
industry standard for waterproofing criteria. The methods of
KC Home Creations are far more involved than many other
remodeling contractors
. We are not just looking to get past the warranty period. When done
correctly a bathroom shower pan should hold up to moisture for 50+
years.
